Q&A with Emilija Fredro-Kumbaradzi
Meet Emilija Fredro-Kumbaradzi, Associate Director, Biowaivers, Bicorrelation and Statistical Support at Apotex. She leads a team of scientists with an expertise in biopharmaceutics and statistics, that are a part of our research and development function. Biopharmaceutics is a pharmaceutical science which relates the physical and chemical properties of the drug substance, dosage form in which the drug is given and the route of administration with the rate and extent of drug absorption. It is a key part of product development, to ensure that they can accurately produce the therapeutic effects that our patient’s need.
Emilija’s team supports product research and development starting from the initiation stage before the product is selected to be added to our product portfolio and continues through all stages of the product life cycle.
We asked Emilija about her experience at Apotex and what she looks for in potential candidates.
Describe your journey with the Apotex team.
In 2003, I made the big decision to move from Macedonia, Europe to Canada. During this pivotal time in my life, I was excited and fortunate to come across a career opportunity at Apotex that aligned with my professional background and career goals. I was working as a professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at a University in Macedonia and when I moved to Canada, I joined the research and development team at Apotex as a Formulation Scientist and have now developed into my current role. I have expanded my academic work experience into industry applied science, which I find rewarding and fulfilling.
What do you enjoy most about working at Apotex each day?
I have the privilege of taking on projects that utilize my skills and expertise and collaborating with a diverse and inspiring group of people each day. Especially over the last year, which has been full of challenges for everyone, I have come to appreciate more than ever, the importance of a positive working environment and having a meaningful career.
You are currently looking to fill a IVIVC Modeling and Dissolution Scientific Leader role on your team, what will that person be doing?
This role acts as a part of a multifunctional team focused primarily on activities related to biopharmaceutics aspects of new product development, it incorporates dissolution research and IVIVC modelling. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Formulation Development and Analytical Development Scientific Leaders to identify and evaluate strategies for formulation design, facilitate product development and ensure bioequivalence, support post-approval changes and product life-cycle management.
The Biowaivers, Bicorrelations and Statistical Support team is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in applying scientific principles to serve in the design of pharmaceutical products that impact millions of people around the world.
What would you say to candidates who are considering applying for a new role at Apotex during COVID-19?
We have taken considerable health and safety measures and continue to adapt based on local government recommendations, to ensure everyone’s safety during this time, for both onsite and remote employees. While it is certainly a challenging time, it is a good opportunity to build strength and resilience.
As a leader, how do you motivate your team?
My priority with my team, has always been to maintain clear communication to ensure that everyone’s contributions are integrated towards the final product. I also encourage all members of the team to take full ownership of their projects and share their recommendations when we come across unanticipated situations. I also believe that recognition and actively supporting your team, goes a long way in helping your team develop towards their professional goals.
What is one thing you would like people to know about working at Apotex?
